Changes…

Many of you know that I took a full-time position at a new Catholic high school in the area.  I believe very strongly in the success of the school and everything it stands for.  I am the school’s Office Manager and I LOVE going to work every day!  I am still making cakes, but have significantly scaled back the number of cakes I do in a weekend, so get your requests to me as soon as you have dates!  That said, I have the following announcement to make.

I want to start off by saying a HUGE THANK YOU to those that have supported me throughout these last few years…family, friends, customers…I am truly blessed!  I love making cakes and seeing the reactions to them!  They are my little babies and I love each and every one!  It has been a pleasure working with each and every one of you to create your perfect cake for your occasions!  I love starting with a wedding cake, making baby shower cakes and then eventually your children’s birthday cakes…it’s fun to be a part of your lives in that way!

Bad Blogger (Sorry!)

Please forgive me…I’ve been a BAD blogger, I know.  I’m sorry!  Allow me to explain!

First, I am a wife and mother to 2 VERY active little boys!  Then I bake and decorate cakes.  During the school year, I work as the school’s Kitchen Manager, cooking lunch for around 150 every day.  It’s an interesting job, very stressful and tiring.  I also serve on our church’s Pastoral Council and Youth Ministry Council, design and layout the school’s auction fundraiser program, co-lead Vacation Bible School, and I could probably go on, but I won’t bore you with all I do!  But you get the drift…I can’t say no and as a result, I’m a busy lady and blogging just got pushed into the VERY low-priority list (I’m sure there’s a lot of you out there that can relate)!  I promise to try harder!

I have been updating all of the galleries with new pictures of the cakes that I’ve been doing.  And if you want more up-to-the-minute updates (or as close as possible, anyway), you can follow me on Facebook…I promise, I update faster there!

There are big changes in store for Cake is Life in the future, including a newly redesigned website (there…I put it out there!  Now my husband HAS to do it!) 🙂

PSA: I’m MELTING!

Often, you will hear me suggest that you just shouldn’t use buttercream in hot weather…this is why!   The lovely Bronwen Weber of Frosted Art Bakery in Dallas, TX has created a cute video explaining this very problem…

So, if you don’t want your cake to melt, please, PLEASE, pretty please…use fondant and DON’T have your cake outside in these conditions (your guests will probably thank you too!). 🙂  After all, you’ve paid all that money for me to spend all that time making and decorating your pretty cake…your guests should be able to enjoy it too!

Announcement: New Cake Shapes


I was generously rewarded by Santa this year, so I thought I would announce the newest additions that will be joining the round and square cake pans!  Please give a warm welcome to the Hexagon and the Petal pan sets! 😉  They have been unpacked, washed and are patiently waiting to be filled with yummy cake batter!

Snow Day!

This post won’t be about cake (sorry!).  We got 12 1/2 inches of snow dumped on us last night and school was cancelled.  I’ve decided to share with you a little of what we do on our days off!  We started the day with French Toast.  Why?  Because we have eggs coming out our ears and 3 loaves of bread, so why not!  Then we made homemade soft pretzels.  This is a tradition that goes back to my childhood…well, my Mom’s childhood, truth be told.  The recipe at the end of the post.

The winner of the Topsy Turvy Cake from my class is:
Finding that winner proved to be a little more challenging than I expected, since no one followed the rules for posting comments!  I gave you all the benefit of the doubt though and created an Excel spreadsheet with everyone’s name on it and added multiples of names for becoming Facebook Fans, Twitter Followers or Blog Subscribers.  Then I copied and pasted the list into the “randomizer” at Random.org.  After putting them in random order, the winner was Kathie Opel.

Kathie chose to bring her cake to her friend’s baby shower.  The theme of the shower was “Vintage Toys”.  The flags came from the design on her invitations.  I’m thrilled with how this cake turned out!  The class was very fun…great company!  I learned some great techniques for making the Topsy Turvy Cake structurally sound.  I will, however, be doing the Topsy Turvy Cake a little differently in the future.  The cake will be a 6″ round with a 10″ round on the bottom.  It should really even have another tier to get the full effect too!  And it will have tapered tiers (larger at the top than at the bottom).
