Bad Blogger (Sorry!)

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Please forgive me…I’ve been a BAD blogger, I know.  I’m sorry!  Allow me to explain!

First, I am a wife and mother to 2 VERY active little boys!  Then I bake and decorate cakes.  During the school year, I work as the school’s Kitchen Manager, cooking lunch for around 150 every day.  It’s an interesting job, very stressful and tiring.  I also serve on our church’s Pastoral Council and Youth Ministry Council, design and layout the school’s auction fundraiser program, co-lead Vacation Bible School, and I could probably go on, but I won’t bore you with all I do!  But you get the drift…I can’t say no and as a result, I’m a busy lady and blogging just got pushed into the VERY low-priority list (I’m sure there’s a lot of you out there that can relate)!  I promise to try harder!

I have been updating all of the galleries with new pictures of the cakes that I’ve been doing.  And if you want more up-to-the-minute updates (or as close as possible, anyway), you can follow me on Facebook…I promise, I update faster there!

There are big changes in store for Cake is Life in the future, including a newly redesigned website (there…I put it out there!  Now my husband HAS to do it!) 🙂

I assure you, I have been making cakes, I still LOVE to make them and will continue to take orders for them!  Email me at CakeIsLife@gmail.com to place your order or use the Contact Form here on the blog.

Thank you so much for your continued loyalty!  It is such a pleasure working with great people such as yourselves!  I’m honored to be part of your special events and I love it that you let me help you to create your perfect custom cake centerpieces!

Catching Up (AGAIN)! Part 2

Here is a recent wedding and groom’s cake I did for a fun couple! I LOVE the design of the wedding cake! Click on the pictures to bring them up bigger so you can see all the detail! I had a lot of fun making this cake!

Congratulations Laura and Ryan! May you live long, happy lives and always enjoy each other’s company!

These cakes were absolutely awesome! Thank you so much Emily for your hard work. They tasted as good as they looked (and I had three out of the four flavors). Thank you again for a fabulous job! ~Laura

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Damask Wedding Cake

Damask Wedding Cake

I love the way this cake came out!  I just wish the picture could have!  The room was decorated just like the table…Green table clothes with the damask runners.  It very St. Patrick’s Day without being in-your-face St. Patrick’s Day!  The room was gorgeous…what’s not to love?  Green…good!  Damask…good!  I thoroughly enjoyed making this cake!

Happy Anniversary!

Today, my husband and I are celebrating our 8th anniversary.  If you would have told me 8 1/2 years ago, when I was ordering my wedding cake that I would some day be making them myself, I would have thought you were crazy!  After all, I didn’t (and still don’t) like to eat cake!  My Mom kept trying to get us to have a wedding pie or a wedding cheesecake…I just couldn’t break tradition though!  Here was my cake…made by the talented Pat Jacoby of Patty Cakes, in Highland IL.  It was all buttercream and I couldn’t even tell you what the flavors were…probably white, chocolate and marble.  Each tier was decorated with a different pattern: Cornelli Lace, Diamond Pattern, Swirls and Dots.  I was one of those brides that I hate to get…”Oh, just whatever you want to do, I don’t really care!”  I think our consultation appointment lasted about 10 minutes!  I’m not sure why I chose square either!  I guess it was the earliest start to my love for cake design, because I love doing square cakes!

If I cared about cake design as much as I do now, and if I were to do it all over again now (to the same wonderful man, of course!), I would choose this cake!  It was made by a designer in the Philippians and it’s absolutely GORGEOUS…stunningly gorgeous!  I, of course, would have chosen to have it made out of silver instead of gold!  Just ask my Mom about searching high and low for a red and green plaid taffeta to make the flower girls dresses out of that didn’t have a gold thread going through it…I was obsessed!

Happy Anniversary, Neil!  Thank you for being there for me every step of the way and thank you for supporting my cake “habit”, for being my dishwasher, occasional cake assistant and most of all, for eating all my scraps! 😉  I love you!

This is a wedding cake that is supposed to resemble a birch tree.  The topper was handmade out of gum paste and rice paper.  The details on the cake were handpainted. Below are some close-ups of the details.

Below are some pictures of close-ups of the details. The first two pictures were taken by Sheena Bowen. Thank you for allowing me to include the pictures, Sheena!

A Feature on Cake Wrecks

To say that there isn’t fear and anxiety when creating cakes is an understatement…you want your cakes to turn out perfectly.  This fear was compounded when I stumbled upon http://www.cakewrecks.com a few years ago.  There is a hope and a prayer that goes out when you create a cake that it won’t somehow end up on that site!  The site full of “professional” cakes that are mostly horrendous…sometimes things are spelled wrong, shaped wrong, or just plain look awful!  When I was notified by one of my followers on Twitter this morning that one of my cakes had been featured on Cake Wrecks…my heart skipped a BIG beat!  I rushed over to see what could possibly have been featured, when I found that it was a part of their “Sunday Sweets” for today.  Each Sunday, the writers feature cakes they (or their readers) find that are complete opposites of wrecks!  Here is the link to the post with this cake:
